Sustainable Agriculture
In a world of constant change, a sustainable food supply which is both local and community owned is a subject which many have not given much thought. While many just assume that they will always have plentiful food they tend to forget how fragile our system is.
Do you know where your food comes from? Do you know what was sprayed on it? Do you know what kind of additives were added to the finished product as a preservatives or to enhance flavor? Many do not, and whats worse is most do not care. They simply say "we are going to die anyways" or "I have been eating it for years and I'm perfectly fine." This is detrimental in terms of food safety, which is completely impossible to ensure with a customer base which neither knows nor cares what their food is doing to their health. The truth is our food is sprayed with horrible pesticides and fertilizers which damage and poison the environment. Many are "Genetically Engineered" causing a staggering amount of effects either sought or unsought by the corporations in control of the whole system. |
Aquaponics
Aquaponics (growing fish and food together) has many benefits which conventional food production does not. For example the need for fertilizer is reduced to practically nothing increasing the systems ability to produce chemical free food because the fish supply the fertilizer. These systems can be grown indoors making pesticides not needed. With these two attributes Aquaponics opens the doors wide for a food supply which is truly organic.
Many people have shown that you can create aquaponics systems in your basement, back yard or in a spare room. This is not somthing that is reserved for the rich, but cheap, easy and available. These systems can produce food for yourself, family and even entire communities. Utilizing this type of a system in local communities we could create a food production system which could be decentralized. There is no reason why we should buy our food from all over the world when we can fee everyone cheap and easy, right from our back yards. Visit our Aquaponics section to learn more. |
